This Paua Korowai is a special cloak inspired by the paua shell found in the waters of Aotearoa. The paua, with its vibrant, shifting colours, symbolizes connectivity and harmony in relationships, reflecting the Māori belief that it brings balance and unity. The changing hues of the shell also represent change and transition, reminding us that, like the paua, we are always evolving as we journey through life.
The colours used in this korowai reflect the ocean’s movement and the passage of time, symbolising the enduring presence of our ancestors. Just as the tides of Aotearoa come and go, the spirits of our ancestors are always with us, guiding and protecting us through each phase of life. The rich blues and greens of the paua speak to the deep knowledge, strength, and love passed down through generations.
With each wear, it symbolises the ongoing flow of change, growth, and the harmonious bond that ties us to Aotearoa and our ancestors.
These colours also can represent the iwi colours - Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngāti Tuwharetoa
